In order to participate in the Tribal Scholarship Program, you must:
Be an ENROLLED MEMBER of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. A Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood must accompany the completed application.
Be a full-time student and enrolled in an academic/vocational/certificate program at an accredited institution.
Undergraduate students: a minimum of 12 quarter or 12 semester credit hours are required for participation in the program. A minimum of (6) quarter hours are required for Summer Session.
Graduate Students: Both part time and full time.
Maintain a MINIMUM of a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) throughout the Academic year which is a “C” average.
Immediately provide the Tribal Higher Education Scholarship Program office with an original copy of your grade report/transcript at the end of each term in order to determine your eligibility for the next term. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY DELAY FURTHER FUNDING.
The MAXIMUM number of years the Scholarship Program will fund a student for an under-graduate degree is 10 semesters/15 quarters; and the MAXIMUM number of years students will be funded at a two-year college is three (3) years OR six (6) Semesters or (9) quarters.
ONCE a student has earned 65 or more credit hours, he/she will be required to transfer to a FOUR-year college or program to be eligible for further Tribal Scholarship Program Funding.
Students who are in a curriculum that must complete 129-160 credits to earn a Bachelor’s degree MAY be eligible up to 12 Semester terms of funding.
Graduate & Post graduate students will be funded a maximum of 5 semesters or $5,000.00 unless they are eligible for an administrative decision for more eligibility.
You will be notified by letter if placed on “PROBATION ”. You are placed on “PROBATION” when the student’s GPA falls below a 2.0 in any one quarter/semester or Summer Session. In addition to your GPA, the following applies:
You will be placed on “PROBATION” if you do not earn a minimum of 12 semester or 12 quarter hours during any given term, except for the SUMMER term where a minimum of six semester/quarter credits are required. You will need to successfully COMPLETE 12 Credits with a 2.0 GPA to be taken off “Probation”.
You will be notified by letter when you are “SUSPENDED” from the program. Notification of “SUSPENSION” from the program will occur when you:
Withdraw from all or a majority of your classes during any one term.
Fail to meet the minimum academic guidelines two consecutive terms.
Earn an extremely low GPA (below 1.0) in any one term.
Reinstatement to the program will require that you pass 12 semester credit hours or 12 quarter hours in your major field of study. Successful completion of these courses means a term GPA of 2.0 or above.
Extenuating or justifiable circumstances may exempt a student from immediate suspension: however, it is the student’s responsibility to notify the THESP Director immediately of these circumstances. Written documentation is required.
STUDENT’S WISHING TO APPEAL DENIAL OF FUNDING (Suspension Status) MUST:
Written Documentation for Reasons of ‘Appeal’;
Letters of Support from college personnel;
Medical Doctor Statements;
Any documents in cases of death of a family member which cause the student a hardship status, etc.
The Scholarship Board Members, who serve as the ‘Appeal Committee’ will be convened to hear and review ALL documentations related to the Appeal. The Student may be present at this meeting. (Any expenses associated with the Student being present at meeting will be of the student.)
The Scholarship Board Members will make a decision based on the documentation(s) that were submitted and any other information the student wishes to ‘orally’ provide.
Once the Board Members DETERMINES a decision, the Scholarship Director with NOTIFY the student in writing by Certified Mail within FIVE(5) working days of meeting. The DECISION OF THE TRIBAL SCHOLARSHIP BOARD MEMBERS WILL BE FINAL.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE APPLICATION FILE
Form THESP 001. This form is used for the initial application and can be requested from the Tribal Scholarship Office. It must be completed by the applicant and received in the office no later than June 1st for PRIORITY FUNDING during the Fall/Spring Semester.
To have a completed file with the office, all of the following documents must be received in this office by no later than August 15th for the Fall/Spring Semester funding.
Certification of Indian Blood. This document can be obtained by requesting in writing from the BIA Branch of Enrollment, PO Box 60, Belcourt, ND 58316 (Phone Number 701-477-6141).
Letter of Acceptance/Admission from the college year are attending.
You will receive an Award Notice from the Financial Aid Office at your college. This document must list your expenses and resources for the academic year for which you are applying.
High School Transcript of GED Certificate. The High School Transcript must include through grade 12.
Updated College Transcripts: Transcripts are required to be submitted to this office from all colleges and/or universities attended.
